HMRC & Companies House to Close Free Filing Services

On 31 March 2026, HMRC will shut down the free service it offers companies to submit their corporation tax return with HMRC and accounts to Companies House. HMRC’s reasoning behind this change is because the current system is deemed not suitable to meet modern digital standards.

From April 2026, companies will be expected to file corporation tax returns and accounts through commercial software.HMRC & Companies House to Close Free Filing Services

Previously Submitted Returns

Please be aware that from 1 April 2026 onwards, companies will no longer be able to access previously filed tax returns that were submitted using HMRC’s free filing service. It is recommended by HMRC that companies download at least three years’ of previously filed tax returns before 1 April 2026.

In addition, if an amendment needs to be made to a return submitted previously using HMRC’s free service, any changes will need to be made through commercial software or done by writing to the corporation tax office.

Next Steps

Although the changes will not take place until next year, we would recommend that if you have not already done so you seek out commercial software that will allow you to submit your company’s corporation tax return to HMRC and company’s accounts to Companies House.

At HWB we use commercial software that can facilitate this, and we can help with any transition your company needs to make to commercial software.
